Man arrested after allegedly firing gun in apartment

TERRE HAUTE — A Poland man has been arrested after his handgun discharged in an apartment house and the bullet lodged in the floor of another unit.

Jeremy Gilbert, 34, appeared Monday morning in Vigo Superior Court 3 on a preliminary charge for criminal recklessness, a class-D felony. Senior Judge Michael Eldred found probable cause for Gilbert’s arrest, but ordered him released from the Vigo County Jail on the condition that he report to the county alcohol and drug program for an evaluation.

Detective Troy Davis reported that at 4:46 p.m. Sunday, Terre Haute Police officers responded to the 1500 block of South Seventh Street on a report of shots fired. An occupant of an apartment told police that someone in an upper story apartment fired a shot that came through the lower apartment’s ceiling and lodged in the floor.

Officers saw the bullet hole in the ceiling and floor of the apartment, and went upstairs to speak to the occupants of the other apartment. A woman answered the door and told police that Gilbert had been handling the gun went it went off, Davis said. Police located Gilbert hiding in a closet, and found the gun hidden in a laundry basket.

Davis said that Gilbert told the officers he had taken prescription medication and had been drinking at the time of the incident.

Gilbert is to return to court Thursday for a 10 a.m. hearing.
