Father, daughter charged for neglect of dependents

TERRE HAUTE — Two individuals were arrested Wednesday by Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies for child neglect, authorities said.

Jennifer Termine, 40, and her father, Norval Sollars, 71,  were arrested and transported to the Vigo County Jail for neglect of dependents, police said.

According to The Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of a family altercation — with Termine being reported as threatening to shoot family members with a gun — in the 7500 block of Pottsville Road in northwestern Vigo County.

But upon arrival, police found no weapons on Termine, the mother of a 19-year-old autistic daughter and two sons, 16 and 13. Another of Termine’s children, a 21-year-old daughter, was also reportedly living at the residence, police said.

A police investigation revealed that the 19-year-old autistic female and the 13-year-old male had been in a physical dispute. The 21-year-old daughter joined the altercation when the 13-year-old male struck her in the head with a walking cane. The older daughter suffered a minor contusion to her head and was later transported by Trans Care to Union Hospital, police said.

As the investigation continued, officers said they observed “deplorable and hazardous living conditions” that the children were subjected to, including cats running loose in the residence and the presence of animal feces and cockroaches throughout the house. Roach-covered food was in large hazardous holes in the floor, and nearly every living space of the home was filled with garbage, police said.

Authorities believe that seven people occupied the home; however, only two beds were found within the residence, police said.

“Because of the deplorable and hazardous living conditions that the children were subjected to, deputies summoned Indiana Child Protective Services,” according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office.

“Investigators from C.P.S. arrived on scene and agreed with deputies that living conditions were hazardous and unsatisfactory for the children,” the office said. “The children were removed from the residence for safe keeping, pending further investigation.”
