Robbery reported near 7th and Elm streets

TERRE HAUTE — An Indiana State University student was the victim of an armed robbery near Seventh and Elm streets just after midnight Thursday, according to a Public Safety crime alert.

The victim had just left the ISU library at midnight and was walking back to his off-campus residence when the incident occurred in the parking lot of the 7th & Elm Bar and Grille, according to Bill Mercier, ISU police chief.

The student was cutting through the parking lot when he was approached by a suspect wearing a white hoody who demanded money. “Initially the victim thought it was joke and told him to get lost,” Mercier said. The suspect then “pulled out a box cutter knife and demanded money.”

The student gave the suspect money, although police are not disclosing the amount. The suspect then ran southwest away from the parking lot.

The suspect is described as a white male with a thin build, about 5-feet, 8-inches tall, wearing blue jeans. The suspect had the white hoody pulled up so the victim couldn’t see his face well.

The victim didn’t report the robbery until 12:30  Thursday afternoon, Mercier said.

He advises students to report such incidents sooner. Also, they should avoid walking alone at night when possible and be aware of their surroundings.

“If anyone saw anything, we’d like to talk to them,” Mercier said.

If students do walk alone at night, they should let someone else know where they are going and when they will be home, he said.

There’s a high concentration of students and off-campus housing in that area, Mercier said, and it’s “a target-rich environment.”

ISU police will increase patrols in the area, and “we’ll raise our visibility,” he said.
