Burning box trailer causes shutdown of I-70 lanes

TERRE HAUTE — A box trailer on fire closed westbound Interstate 70 near the 12-mile marker in Vigo County for a few hours early Thursday.

Indiana State Police at Putnamville said westbound I-70 traffic was stopped about a mile west of the Indiana 46 exit because of the fire.

ISP reports that at about 12:30 a.m., Ronald Spotts, 53, of Addison, N.Y., was driving the westbound vehicle when he noticed that his box trailer — which was hauling about 46,000 pounds of sauerkraut — appeared to be on fire. Spotts pulled the vehicle to the emergency shoulder of the highway and disengaged the semi’s tractor from the trailer.

Riley firefighters extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported. Westbound traffic was stopped for about 40 minutes.

The highway was reportedly reopened by 7:30 a.m.

Police said the semi’s trip had begun in Richmond, Ind., but a destination was unknown.
