TERRE HAUTE — An inmate at the Federal Correction Complex at Terre Haute has died of injuries from an Oct. 24 incident at the prison.

Michael Shane Phipps, 36, sustained an injury which resulted in his death, and the institution was placed in lockdown status, said Marvin Pitt, executive assistant to the warden. There were no injuries to staff and no threat to the community, prison officials said.

No additional information was released by prison officials, though Pitt told the Tribune-Star the case has been referred to the FBI.

Phipps was sentenced to federal prison in 2002 after being convicted by a federal jury of kidnapping, carjacking and firearms offenses in Texas in 2000. His co-defendant in the case, Dean Rayburn Gilley, was also convicted, but died in federal prison in 2008 at age 29.
