Storms cause minor damage in Valley

TERRE HAUTE — Tuesday morning storms in the Wabash Valley caused thousands of Duke Energy customers to lose power.

By 8 p.m., nearly all of those customers had power restored, according to the company website.

At its peak, 4,300 Vigo County customers were without power; 2,800 in Sullivan and 450 in Clay County, said Rick Burger, Duke spokesman.

The hardest hit communities were Riley in Vigo County and another area that included Lewis, Coalmont, Hymera and north of Jasonville.

Riley Elementary was without power until 10:30 a.m., Burger said.

The school used emergency lighting and generators as well as natural light from windows, said Superintendent Dan Tanoos. The school protection officer helped monitor those coming and going, he said.

To help restore power after the storm, crews came from Greencastle, Clinton and  Brazil, Burger said. Twenty additional contractors assisted.
