Tribune-Star staff wins awards from IAPME

TERRE HAUTE — The Tribune-Star was well represented once again at the annual Indiana Associated Press Media Editors awards in Indianapolis Saturday.

The paper’s editorial staff carried home a pair of statewide first place awards, four second place awards and two third place honors.

Photographer Joseph C. Garza brought home three awards from the annual luncheon, which is attended by journalism professionals from around the state. Garza received a first place award for a feature photo of Deming Elementary School students pretending to be baby pigs in a production of “Farewell to the Farm.” Garza also received second place honors for spot news coverage and for a photo package titled “Honor and Patriotism.”

Tribune-Star editor Max Jones also received a first place award in the IAPME editorial writing category for editorials on the conflict at Cobblestone Crossings, ways to be a better citizen and for a third editorial in opposition to a proposed same-sex marriage ban in the state.

The Tribune-Star’s Mark Bennett received four awards at the annual IAPME lunch. Bennett won two second place honors – one for a feature titled “The Ultimate Christmas Gift,” and another in the category of column writing. His winning columns were about friends remembering Fred Poore, who died in a fire in Garfield Towers last year, “A picture of Christmas” and the defeat of state school superintendent Tony Bennett in the 2012 election. Bennett also won a pair of third place honors in the categories of feature writing and editorial writing.

Finally, the Tribune-Star’s Merv Hendricks received second place in editorial writing for his editorials: “Sweet deal from Amazon.com,” “Toke ‘em if ya got ‘em” and “Electing schools chief provides balance.”
