Bus service for ISU OK’d for another year

School to pay city $237,120

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Board of Public Works and Safety on Monday approved an agreement for another year of bus service for Indiana State University students, faculty and staff.

According to the agreement, which takes effect Aug. 1, ISU will pay the City of Terre Haute $237,120 for a full year of service in two equal payments.

Under the agreement, ISU students, faculty and staff ride the city buses free by showing a valid ISU ID card.

The board, a five-member body appointed by the mayor to oversee city contracts, approved the contract without opposition. Board member Roland Shelton, who works for ISU, abstained.

The Terre Haute Transit Utility launched the ISU campus shuttle service in 2007. At that time, the ISU trustees approved a $15 per semester transportation fee for students enrolled in six or more credit hours to fund the shuttle. The shuttle remains funded by student fees.

In 2007, the new service required the Transit Utility to revamp routes and hire nearly a dozen new employees, according to Tribune-Star reports at the time. It also added routes, including an all-day campus route.

Ivy Tech faculty, students and staff can also ride the city buses free of charge with a valid Ivy Tech Community College – Wabash Valley ID.

For more information on available bus routes visit the Transit Department section of the City of Terre Haute website at www.terrehaute.in.gov.

n The Board of Works also approved a request Monday from ISU to add a pull off lane on North Eighth Street on the east side of the ISU College of Nursing near Chestnut Street. At present, there is no place for vehicles to drop off passengers or make deliveries to the building and motorists frequently pull into the tree row, said Bryan Duncan, director of capital planning and improvements at ISU.

The lane will be added in an area where there is currently no parking allowed, Duncan told the board.

Board member Shelton also abstained from this vote.
