Trial date set for suspect in Bogey’s burglary

TERRE HAUTE — A Jan. 14 trial date has been set for a Terre Haute man whom police suspect of burglarizing a local business and crashing a minivan into a telephone pole early Saturday morning

Kyle Layman, 27, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Thursday where he was formally charged with burglary, a class-B felony, and class-D felonies of theft and resisting law enforcement.

He also faces a habitual offender enhancement because he has at least two prior unrelated felony convictions. Court records show that Layman was convicted in 2006 of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, burglary and theft; in 2012, he was sentenced for a domestic offense.

Judge David Bolk found probable cause for Layman’s arrest on Monday while the defendant remained hospitalized in Indianapolis after he wrecked a vehicle while fleeing from police. He was being sought for burglarizing Bogey’s Family Fun Center early Saturday morning.

Layman was released from the hospital Monday afternoon. He appeared in court Thursday to hear criminal charges. His bond was set at $60,000 cash only, and at the request of public defender James Organ, a bond reduction hearing is now set for Aug. 1.
