Tips led to arrests of robbery suspects

TERRE HAUTE — After receiving multiple overnight tips from the public, Indiana State Police detectives and FBI agents arrested two Terre Haute men on Tuesday in connection with robbing the First Financial Bank branch in Farmersburg on Monday.

Kenneth E. Shelton, 43, is suspected of entering the bank and demanding money from a teller, ISP said in a press release. He was arrested at the home of a friend on Wilson Street in Terre Haute and was being held in the Sullivan County Jail.

Also arrested was Ryan M. Ellinger, 20, suspected of driving a getaway vehicle. He was arrested Tuesday at his workplace in Terre Haute, ISP said.

Shelton and Ellinger each have been preliminarily charged with one count of robbery.

The FBI and State Police received numerous community tips after local media outlets showed bank surveillance photos of the robbery.

ISP detectives have recovered a significant amount of evidence related to this case, but the actual items cannot be revealed yet, according to the press release.

Officers from the Terre Haute Police Department and FBI Safe Streets Task Force assisted with the investigation.

Sgt. Joe Watts of the Indiana State Police credited good surveillance photos from the bank, support from local news media, citizen confidence that their tips would be acted upon and aggressive police work throughout the night by investigators for the relative speed in solving the case.
