City man facing multiple charges for battery, threats

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man faces multiple criminal charges after allegedly beating another person and threatening him with a handgun.

Forrest G. Schmitt, 22, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Thursday where he was charged with aggravated battery, a class-B felony, and the class-D felonies of intimidation, pointing a firearm and criminal recklessness.

Judge John Roach set an April 21 trial date for Schmitt.

He was arrested by Terre Haute Police after a Nov. 7 incident in the 1900 block of North Seventh Street in which he allegedly struck a person multiple times in the face with his fist, causing facial fractures and a broken nose requiring surgery.

Schmitt also allegedly pointed a handgun at the person and threatened to shoot the person, and he allegedly fired the .40-caliber handgun in the back yard of his home while another person was nearby.

Bail was set at $50,000 cash only, and a public defender was appointed. Schmitt is scheduled to return to court next Friday for a hearing.
