TERRE HAUTE —
A Terre Haute man who is already on the sex offender registry has been charged with child molesting stemming from an incident that is alleged to have occurred early last year.
Charles B. Hancock, 38, appeared Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 1 where he was charged with class-C felony child molesting for allegedly fondling or touching a child in the groin area in April or early May 2011. The alleged victim, who is younger than age 14, was on a weekend visitation with a parent at a grandparent’s home near West Terre Haute when the incident occurred.
A person in the home witnessed Hancock allegedly touching the child, and Hancock was told to leave the residence. In an interview with Detective Karen Cross, Hancock stated that he had ridden his moped to the home where the incident occurred.
Hancock’s mother appeared in court Thursday where she told the judge that her son has a low IQ and that she is his legal guardian. Judge John Roach set Hancock’s bail at $45,000 cash only.
Roach scheduled a Jan. 29 hearing to set trial dates.
