Man airlifted after SUV hits 2 poles

Injuries ‘serious,’ official says

TERRE HAUTE — One man was taken by helicopter on Sunday to an Indianapolis trauma center after a single-vehicle accident in Otter Creek in Vigo County.

Doug Hanna of the Otter Creek Fire Department, who was incident commander at the scene, told the Tribune-Star that the man was ejected from the vehicle and was trapped under the rear side of the vehicle. Firefighters had to extricate the man from under the vehicle and then administer medical care, he said.

Hanna was uncertain about the extent of the injuries but described them as “serious.”

The incident, which occurred just south of the intersection of Rosedale Road and Rose Hill Avenue, was reported around 7 p.m. Sunday. Motorists passing by reported the incident to authorities, Hanna said.

As the gurney was rolled away to the helicopter, the Tribune-Star observed the injured person to be an older white male who appeared to be unconscious. He had an oxygen mask and an IV attached.

The vehicle, a Toyota Rav-4 SUV, appeared to have been headed north on Rosedale Road and struck two utility poles, both of which were damaged. The vehicle rested on its left side against a utility pole.

The Otter Creek Fire Department, Vigo County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police responded to the incident.
