More voting centers now open

Restaurant, grocery, church among sites available to early voters

TERRE HAUTE — Starting today, Vigo County voters will be able to cast ballots in the 2014 primary election at seven additional voting centers located throughout the county.

Citizens have been able to vote at the Vigo County Courthouse since April 8 and at the Vigo County Annex for the past week.

Today, they will have seven more options at the following locations: Baesler’s Grocery Store, 2900 Poplar St.; Old State Police Post, 7751 S. U.S. 41; Valley Grill, 2170 N. Third St.; Booker T. Washington Community Center, 1101 S. 13th St.; New Life Fellowship Church, East Glenn; West Vigo Community Center, West Terre Haute; Kroger North, 2140 Fort Harrison Road.

“We’re trying to make it convenient for people to vote,” said Dave Crockett, Vigo County clerk. “It allows people the opportunity to vote early so they don’t have to worry about voting Election Day if they have other plans.”

The voting centers that open today are located in different geographical areas. “We went north, south, east and west to make it convenient for everybody and in every area,” Crockett said.

Hours for the seven additional voting centers, as well as the Vigo County Annex, are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 8 a.m. to noon May 5. By state law, they must close at noon on May 5, which is the day before the election.

Those sites will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Election Day.

The courthouse will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon May 5. It is not open Election Day.

Voters must provide a driver’s license or state-issued photo ID.

On Election Day, there will be 10 additional voting centers open for a total of 18, Crockett said.

The May 6 primary election marks a change for Vigo County voters. Instead of visiting a specific site to cast a ballot in one of 87 precincts, voters will cast a ballot in any of the 18 vote centers.

It’s also a first for county voters to use a touch-screen to cast a ballot. Mailed absentee ballots still require a paper ballot be filled out and returned.
