Lilly to buy Novartis Animal Health

Company says move will not impact Terre Haute, Clinton operations

TERRE HAUTE — Eli Lilly and Co. plans to acquire Novartis Animal Health for about $5.4 billion, a move believed to strengthen and diversify Lilly’s own animal health business, Elanco.

Upon completion of the acquisition, Elanco will be the second-largest animal health company in terms of global revenue, Indianapolis-based Lilly said in a news release Tuesday.

Elanco has a Wabash Valley presence, with a facility in Terre Haute on South First Street and at Elanco’s Clinton Laboratories north of Clinton on Indiana 63.

Tuesday’s announcement is not expected to have an impact on the Terre Haute and Vermillion County operations, said Colleen Parr Dekker, Elanco spokeswoman. “We don’t expect to see any effect on our local operations,” she said.

The facilities in Terre Haute and Clinton “do very different things than the sites we’ll acquire with this deal,” she said. “They are very complementary to each other.”

Elanco in Terre Haute makes enzymes for animal feed “that are important to help animals be more productive and efficient with feed given to them,” she said

Different types of animal feed products are made at the Clinton labs, she said.

The Terre Haute facility, formerly owned by ChemGen, was acquired by Elanco in 2012.

With a presence in 40 countries and 2013 revenue of about $1.1 billion, Novartis Animal Health focused on developing better ways to prevent and treat diseases in pets, farm animals and farmed fish, according to a Lilly news release.

Lilly will acquire Novartis Animal Health’s nine manufacturing sites; six research and development facilities; a global commercial infrastructure with a portfolio of about 600 products; a pipeline with more than 40 projects in development; and an experienced team of more than 3,000 employees.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of the first quarter of 2015, according to the news release.
