Terre Haute man faces attempted murder charge

TERRE HAUTE — A formal charge of attempted murder has been filed in a shooting that hospitalized a Terre Haute man on Friday.

John W. Johnson, 72, of Terre Haute, requested a public defender when he appeared via video Wednesday in Vigo Superior Court 6. Judge Michael Lewis appointed attorney Rowdy Williams to the case.

Lewis told Johnson he is facing a 20- to 50-year prison term if found guilty of attempting to murder the victim, who was shot multiple times at close range.

A trial date of Dec. 16 was set in the case. Johnson is being held in the Vigo County Jail. Lewis set his bail at $250,000 cash only.

Terre Haute Police report that officers were dispatched to the 300 block of North 18th Street at 7 p.m. Friday in reference to a shooting. They found a male victim on the porch of the residence with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to an out-of-the-area hospital for treatment.

Witnesses to the shooting identified the suspect as Johnson. When police arrived at Johnson’s residence in the 2300 block of Second Avenue, Johnson came to the door with his hands in front of him and advised officers that they needed to take him to jail, according to police.

Police have stated that Johnson and the man who was shot have a relative in common. Court records also show that man is wanted on a warrant for a probation violation.
