Greene County police probe fatal shooting

TERRE HAUTE — Police in Greene County are investigating a fatal shooting resulting from a domestic dispute that took place Monday evening southeast of Bloomfield.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Department, in a news release issued Tuesday, said James L. Austin, 33, Bloomfield, was discovered dead at a residence on the Mineral/Koleen Road. An autopsy Tuesday by Dr. Roland Kohr at Terre Haute Regional Hospital determined Austin died from a single gunshot wound, according to the release.

The sheriff’s department reported that they received a 911 call about 5:30 p.m. Monday from a 32-year-old woman stating Austin had been shot and needed an ambulance. Officers soon arrived and secured the scene while EMS determined Austin was dead, according to the release.

Police said Austin was shot once with a handgun.

The woman was taken to the Greene County jail at approximately 6 p.m. and was interviewed by Detective George Dallaire of the sheriff’s department. She was released at 10 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation and no additional information beyond what was provided in the Tuesday afternoon news release is currently available, according to the sheriff’s department.

All findings from the investigation will be forwarded to the Greene County prosecutor’s office, according to the news release.
