TERRE HAUTE — Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Tonya Burris-Mallory, will host the Indiana South District Sunday School Convention Friday and Saturday at the chapel.

This convention has been held annually for more than 85 years.

District pastors, other religious leaders and youths from central and southern Indiana churches will attend the convention, which is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. Friday with song, prayer, scripture and greetings from Mayor Duke Bennett.

Their welcome will also include gift bags courtesy of the Terre Haute Visitors Center that will  include information from local schools of higher learning.

At the “Elder's Word,” the adult leaders will explore the theme of the convention and determine the direction they will pursue in increasing youth outreach, more effective teaching modes and techniques, and overall evangelism.

The young people will meet in Fairbanks Park where they will engage in social activities, including character building, education enrichment through the arts and physical activities.

After an evening picnic in the park for the conventioneers, the youths will entertain on the stage of the amphitheater with song, dance, poetry, dramatic readings, mime and musical talent.

A Bible Bowl contest is scheduled for youth from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Twenty-five to 30 teams made up of five contestants each and divided into two age groups, 6-11 and 12-18, will be asked questions selected from 283 Bible verses.
