Hymera Elementary closed for second day Wednesday

Power loss causes pipes to freeze, burst

HYMERA — Hymera Elementary was closed Tuesday because of a power outage and again Wednesday when the power outage caused water pipes to freeze and burst, officials said.

The district hoped to complete repairs and reopen school today, said Superintendent Mark Baker.

The district will apply for a waiver so the school does not have to make up the two days, he said.

Water is needed for the school’s heating system, Baker said. Two boilers in the basement pump hot water through water lines, and heat is provided through radiators or univents that serve each classroom.

School officials found some problems with leaking water Tuesday but believed the problems had been addressed that evening in all but two rooms.

But when they returned at 6 a.m. Wednesday, they found more pipes had burst, and school had to be canceled. At least eight rooms were involved and there was water all over the floors, Baker said. “It was a mess.”

There’s been no equipment damage, he said, but measures had to be taken to keep carpet from getting mold and mildew.
