Downtown TH members hear about new signs, parking study

TERRE HAUTE — Results of a downtown parking study may be ready by early summer, members and potential members of Downtown Terre Haute Inc. were told Wednesday night at a membership drive reception.

Hannum, Wagle and Cline Engineering, a Terre Haute firm, has been hired to conduct the parking and pedestrian study, which will analyze the downtown parking spots and  look at utilization of parking garages, among other things.

The study is an inventory of the area today and what the needs are going to be years from now, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett told the gathering, conducted at the Indiana Theatre.

They’re also looking at pedestrian and bicycle traffic and will examine bike paths, bike racks and signs.

Those doing the study are collecting data right now, and when the weather clears, researchers will be out in the field more, Bennett added.

This study may be included in the updates to the downtown vision plan, which the mayor also briefly spoke about at the event.

A firm will be hired for that plan, which will cost about $50,000 and will come out of the mayor’s budget, he said.

Bennett said the two previous plans done years ago will be taken into account and updated. The new plan will look at such factors as infrastructure, signage, lighting, retail opportunities and residential housing-related opportunities. It may also offer suggestions based on what works in other communities.

“They will take what we’ve been successful with and set out some goals for us for the next five years,” Bennett said.

The vision plan will take six to nine months to complete, with results expected early next year. Focus groups with community members will be conducted along the way.

The mayor also spoke about plans to purchase and install signs as a “way finding” initiative around the downtown area. He said he wanted input from Downtown Terre Haute members regarding this project.

“My goal is to have signs up by the end of the year on Third Street pointing people both to the downtown area and to the river,” Bennett said. That may be all the city can afford this year, he said, but more signs may be installed in 2015.
