New principal for Sarah Scott Middle

Woodrow Wilson aide Lautenschlager takes over in August

TERRE HAUTE — Sarah Scott Middle School will have a new principal for the new school year.

Bruce Lautenschlager will be Sarah Scott’s new principal, effective Aug. 5.

He’s been at Woodrow Wilson Middle School for the past 18 years, including 11 as assistant principal. Before that, he was a dean, teacher and coach.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he said of his new duties at Sarah Scott. “With Sharon [Pitts] retiring, I just kind of assumed I’d step into that role.” Pitts recently retired as the Woodrow Wilson principal.

When he became aware of the opportunity at Sarah Scott, “I started mulling it around and got excited about it,” he said.

Sarah Scott is a Title 1 middle school. In February, Lautenschlager completed his doctoral degree at Indiana State University in educational leadership. His dissertation was on successful public Title 1 middle schools in Indiana.

“I get to take some of the research I’ve done and put it into practice,” he said.

Also making the move will be Dan Raubuck, who has been a teacher and dean at Woodrow Wilson. Raubuck will become the new dean at Sarah Scott.

“Danny [Raubuck] and I have worked together since I’ve been at Wilson,” Lautenschlager said. They both taught physical education and invented the “Equalizer,” equipment that assisted students with physical disabilities. The invention was patented.

Lautenschlager said his “roots” are at Sarah Scott, where his father, Harlan, taught and coached for many years.

Lautenschlager replaces Sarah Scott principal Greg Gauer, who will become a language arts lab teacher at Woodrow Wilson, according to a personnel report approved by the Vigo County School Board Monday.

Also, David Bray will become assistant principal at Otter Creek Middle School, replacing Joyce Schopmeyer. He has been a North Vigo High School assistant principal. That change is effective Aug. 5.
