Meeting June 18 to discuss cleanup of former Coke, Carbon site

TERRE HAUTE — The public can learn more about plans to clean up the former Terre Haute Coke and Carbon brownfield site Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Booker T. Washington Community Center

The meeting, sponsored by the City of Terre Haute, will include Mayor Duke Bennett, other city officials and a representative from Weaver Boos Consultants, the company hired by the city to create a formal plan to clean up the site, the long-time location of Indiana Gas & Chemical, later called Terre Haute Coke and Carbon.

The meeting will take place in the second-floor conference room of the community center, which is at 1101 S. 13th St. in Terre Haute.

The planned cleanup will deal with 20 acres of the approximately 55-acre brownfield site, which is at the intersection of Hulman and 13th streets. The meeting will provide project details and address questions from the public.

City officials hope to have the cleanup completed by the end of this year. Their plan is to then make the property, owned by the Terre Haute Department of Redevelopment, available for light industrial and commercial business investment.

Late last year, the city awarded a $2.7-million contract to HIS Constructors of Indianapolis to clean up the 20-acre section of the brownfield site. City officials have said the funding to pay for the clean up is essentially “free money” since a discount on a city bond is covering the cost.

The Terre Haute Sanitary District is borrowing about $150 million to essentially replace the city’s wastewater treatment facility. The loan is going through the Indiana Finance Authority, which is granting the city a discounted interest rate because some of the funding will also be used to clean up the former Coke and Carbon site, an environmentally contaminated area. The savings from the discounted interest rate are great enough to cover the cost of the cleanup, city officials have said.
