New tenants taking up residency at airport

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute International Airport-Hulman Field is looking forward to welcoming two new tenants to its east-side facility this summer.

JWS Machine, a Clay County machining company, and the Indiana State University Flight Academy both have leases at the airport set to begin July 1, said Bill McKown, director of the airport.

JWS Machine, which has about 35 employees, will be moving from Clay County to the former Ivy Tech building at the airport. Significant renovations have been made for JWS and for the new ISU academy, McKown told the Airport Authority Board on Wednesday night.

The ISU Flight Academy is expected to bring more than 250 students and faculty to the airport. It is set to begin full-scale operations in the fall.

Meanwhile, the airport is seeking proposals from anyone interested in operating the restaurant at Hulman Field. The most recent operator of the restaurant closed the business at the end of February, McKown told the board.

The restaurant, which measures more than 1,700 square feet, is on the ground floor of the airport and includes tables, chairs and some equipment for any possible operator, according to the “request for proposals” on the airport’s website,

The addition of the ISU Flight Academy and JWS Machine should provide a nice pool of potential new customers for the restaurant, airport officials said. The airport is already home to organizations and businesses with more than 100 employees in addition to more than 400 full-time employees at the 181st Intelligence Wing just to the east.

Finally, the airport board also discussed upcoming runway maintenance to repair minor holes or cracks, McKown said. Those repairs should be of minimal cost to the airport because the runways are currently under warranty, he said, adding they do not present a danger but need to be repaired.

Terre Haute International Airport is overseen by a six-person board of directors. Three members are appointed by the City of Terre Haute while three are appointed by Vigo County.
