Tribune-Star staff takes awards for writing, editing, design

TERRE HAUTE — The Tribune-Star won three first-place awards among Indiana newspapers with a daily circulation between 18,001 and 39,999 in the 2013 Hoosier State Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

In all, six staff members won a total of eight awards, including best editorial writer, best feature story and best editorial page.

The awards were presented Saturday at the Indianapolis Marriott North.

Staff member Merv Hendricks took first and third honors. Hendricks received first for Best Editorial Writer for an entry of three editorials, including “Electing schools chief provides balance,” an editorial favoring the election of state school superintendents. He received a third-place award for headline writing.

Tribune-Star reporter Sue Loughlin scored a first place for Best Short Feature Story with “Canine pair prove puppy love is real,” her story about Ben, a 70-pound dog who walked 10 miles to reunite with the mother of his puppies at the Terre Haute Humane Society shelter.

Editor Max Jones also received first place for Best Editorial Page.

Mark Bennett, Tribune-Star columnist, took a second place award for Best In-depth Feature for his “The ultimate Christmas gift,” a story about a department store Santa Claus who, in 1898, died after rescuing several children and employees from a fire that destroyed the store. He took third in the category of Best Profile Feature for “Sharpens up customers for 50 years,” a feature story about a Terre Haute barber in business for five decades.

Tribune-Star features editor Alicia Morgan took a second place award in the category of Best Business Section for the paper’s Jobs and Money section.

And reporter Lisa Trigg took third-place honors in the category of Best News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure for her article, “Alleged abuse victim jumps to freedom.”

“I am extremely proud to be work with such professionals here at the Tribune-Star,” said B.J. Riley, publisher. “I know that every day the reporters and editors strive to do the best job that they can. These awards are well-deserved, and I congratulate the winners.”

The HSPA divides nondaily newspapers into two divisions and daily papers into four. Daily newspapers with circulations of 18,001-39,999 make up Division 5.
