Battery, stabbing suspects face charges

TERRE HAUTE — The condition has improved for a Terre Haute man who sustained severe head injuries in an assault on Friday afternoon.

Terre Haute Police Assistant Chief Shawn Keen said the 34-year-old victim had regained consciousness as of Monday afternoon and was still hospitalized. No additional details were available.

The injured man was taken first to Union Hospital, then transferred to another area hospital for additional treatment.

Police arrested Paul A. Lovell, 36, on suspicion of aggravated battery related to the incident in the 2100 block of Locust Street.

Lovell appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Monday morning, and Judge John Roach set a Thursday court date for formal charges to be filed in the case.

A police investigation revealed that a baseball bat had been used in the incident.

Meanwhile, another Terre Haute man arrested in relation to a separate violent crime also will return to Division 1 court on Thursday.

Anthony Thigpen, 18, was arrested Saturday morning at a motel on the city’s north side after a man was stabbed multiple times in his back and abdomen.

He faces a charge of aggravated battery for the attack the 21-year-old stabbing victim, who was staying at the motel with Thigpen and another person.

The bail amount for both Lovell and Thigpen is $75,000, cash only.
