Lugar Center to offer CPR training sessions today

TERRE HAUTE — Staff members from Union Hospital are partnering with Clark County (Ill.) residents to offer free CPR training to interested community members.

The event, offering hands-only CPR, is at 11:30 a.m.  CDT today at the Roosevelt Community Center, 401 E. Main St., Casey, Ill. Training sessions will be every half hour until 5:30 p.m.

Hands-only CPR teaches the basics without mouth-to-mouth breaths. The training encourages bystanders of a cardiac event to take action. The training is encouraged for children.

According to the American Heart Association, nearly 400,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States, and an individual’s survival often depends on whether or not immediate CPR is given.

The training sessions are offered through a federal grant awarded to Union Hospital’s Richard G. Lugar Center for Rural Health. The Lugar Center, in its mission of “advancing rural health through education, innovation, and collaboration,” was recently awarded funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration to purchase several Automated External Defibrillators to be placed in rural Parke and Vermillion counties in Indiana, and Clark County in Illinois counties.

The grant also allows for training sessions to be provided by certified American Heart Association instructors through Union Hospital’s AHA Training Center.

In addition to the public Hands-Only CPR course, a group of youth coaches from the community will be provided a more advanced session that teaches CPR and the use of AEDs.

Any organization in Parke or Vermillion counties in Indiana or Clark county in Illinois interested in hosting a community CPR/AED training event or seeking more information about the project, contact Jackie Mathis,, at Union Hospital’s Richard G. Lugar for Rural Health. This project is funded by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration.
