Semitrailer fire slows eastbound traffic on Interstate 70

RILEY — Traffic on Interstate 70 was slowed Thursday afternoon by a semitrailer fire just east of Terre Haute.

About 3 p.m. Thursday, police and fire officials were called to a burning semitrailer near the 12-mile marker of eastbound 70. A preliminary investigation showed the box trailer likely caught on fire from a brake problem. Fire spread quickly into the contents of the trailer, which police identified as cardboard.

The driver of the semitrailer, Jorge A. Ramirez, 48, of Battle Creek, Mich., attempted to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but was unsuccessful, according to a news release from the Indiana State Police. Riley Fire/Rescue arrived within minutes and extinguished the blaze, the release stated.

There were no injuries reported. Traffic in the eastbound lanes of I-70 was slowed for about 90 minutes because of the fire, the ISP reported.

The truck, registered to Hass Trucking of Albion, Mich., was traveling from Evansville to Battle Creek, Mich., police stated.
