Four juveniles caught on elementary school roof; one injured jumping off

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Police say a juvenile was lucky to have suffered only a broken leg after jumping from the roof of a Vigo County elementary school – dropping about 30 feet to the ground.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, in a news release issued on Monday, said deputies responded to a call Sunday of “suspicious persons” at Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary in rural West Terre Haute. When the first deputy arrived, he saw a male juvenile on the school’s roof who then moved out

of sight.

Another deputy and a member of the West Terre Haute Police Department arrived and took positions around the building to spot the youth. They then found three other male juveniles within the locked, fenced playground area of the school. They also spotted the youth on the roof again at this time, according to the news release.

Soon, police heard a scream and discovered the first juvenile had jumped from the roof at a point about 30 feet from the ground. He was treated at the scene by Sugar Creek Fire/Rescue before being taken to Union Hospital where he was treated for what was said to be a fractured leg.

All four juveniles were cited for criminal trespassing, and the Vigo County School Corp. was made aware of the incident, according to the news release.

The youth was lucky to have only suffered a fractured leg, said Clark Cottom, chief deputy with the Sheriff’s Department. The fall could have easily been fatal, he said.
