Vigo County YMCA celebrates its one-year anniversary

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County YMCA is celebrating its one-year anniversary today offering the public free use of the facility and classes.

The event is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with numerous free classes being offered for everyone.

“We really want the community to come out and join us for our one-year celebration of serving them,” said Eleanor Ramseier, executive director of the Vigo County YMCA. “This is, in fact, for the community.”

And for $5, people can enjoy a lemon-shake up and a sati babi, provided by Satibabi Inc. All donations go to the YMCA’s summer camp.

Over the past year, Vigo County’s YMCA has had a few keystone moments, said Deborah Ringo, CEO of Vigo and Clay County’s YMCA facilities.

“Obviously opening the facility was a huge accomplishment,” she said. “Another big moment was raising over the 320 units (individuals, a family or a couple) needed to show that the community was committed to the Y opening a facility in Vigo County.”

Within the first year the YMCA has seen success by passing the original goal of units — 1,600 units was the projected number, but it ended the year with 2,400.

As the first year concludes, the Vigo County YMCA looks forward by partnering with Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. That enables the use of Rose Hulman’s pool facility by YMCA members and using their space for exercise classes.

“I am really excited Rose-Hulman decided to partner with the Y,” Ramseier said. “It shows they noticed that we have been there for the community.”

The YMCA will also be focusing on the growing phenomena of childhood obesity. They are helping to curve those numbers by focusing on programming and classes, especially for the youth, she said. As the YMCA grows, its capacity to help out the community also grows.

“I am very proud of the work that has been done to make this Y a success,” Ramseier said. “We are blessed to have an amazing staff and great community partners to make this a reality. I believe the Y is a model for other not-for-profits.”
