Vermillion CSX crossings undergoing maintenance

DANA — CSX maintenance crews are working on railroad crossings between Dana and Chrisman, Ill. this week and next, a CSX official said Thursday.

One railroad crossing was closed on Indiana 71 at Dana in Vermillion County, causing motorists and a school bus to take detours that would have caused some delays. That crossing re-opened Thursday, said Bob Spence, Vermillion County sheriff. Indiana 71 “is the main thoroughfare getting in and out of Dana,” he said.

Initially, CSX attempted to close the crossing without notifying the Indiana Department of Transportation, and the closing was delayed, Spence said.

The sheriff’s department and emergency services were aware of the closure “and how to get around” using detours in the event of an emergency, he said.

INDOT did issue a news release May 8 to inform residents that the Indiana 71 crossing in Dana would be closed this week for repairs and resurface work, said Debbie Calder, INDOT spokeswoman. The news release provided the detour.

Calder also notified South Vermillion School Corp. INDOT requires three weeks advance notice before a railroad crossing can be closed on a state highway so it, in turn, can notify the public and authorities, she said.

Carla Groleau, CSX spokeswoman, stated in an email that “CSX maintenance crews are working their way down the tracks from crossing to crossing improving our rail network” in that area. “The team is working their way west and will finish in Chrisman [Illinois]. If all goes as planned, the project is expected to be complete by the end of next week.”

Weather and other factors can affect the schedule, she stated. “The company understands this work can affect the communities in which we operate, and we will make every effort to move through the region as safely and swiftly as possible,” she stated.

CSX notified INDOT of the work, and detour signage also was in place, Groleau stated.
