Grant awarded to replace Greene County bridge

TERRE HAUTE — A federal grant awarded to the Indiana Department of Transportation will enable the replacement of a more than century-old bridge in Greene County, according to a news release issued by Sen. Joe Donnelly’s office on Friday.

Awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER Discretionary Grant, allows Indiana’s DOT the opportunity to replace the White River Freight Railroad Bridge, which is 110 years old, with a new bridge. This $8.2 million project will improve freight transportation in Greene County by supporting industry weight standards for railcars and will remove the current clearance restrictions set by the current bridge.

The TIGER Discretionary Grant Program is a highly competitive process and receives interest from applicants across the country, the news release stated. For FY 2012, the DOT awarded 46 projects to 33 states and Puerto Rico, and each selected project is multi-modal, multi-jurisdictional, or otherwise challenging to fund through existing programs. For more information about the TIGER program, visit www.dot.gov/tiger.
