2 adults, 2 children injured in crash on U.S. 41

TERRE HAUTE — Four people — including two children — were injured in a three-vehicle crash at U.S. 41 near Dallas Drive on Friday afternoon, authorities said.

Brenda Tuttle of Farmersberg suffered from severe head, chest and leg injuries, had to be extricated from her vehicle and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital. Tuttle’s vehicle rear-ended another vehicle carrying two children, ages 3 and 7, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.

The 7-year-old suffered a concussion as a result of the collision, police said. The driver, Lorie Singh of Terre Haute, and the 3-year-old suffered abrasions and bruises. The family’s injuries did not appear life threatening, police said.

Witnesses told police that Tuttle’s black 2007 Ford Explorer SUV was southbound on U.S. 41 when it failed to adequately slow as it entered the construction zone near Stuckey’s Convenience Mart. Traffic was stopped in the area and was backed up approximately three quarters of a mile due to the construction, authorities said.

Tuttle “veered abruptly” as she approached the stopped traffic but rear ended a 2013 Honda Pilot SUV operated by Singh, according to a release.

Singh’s vehicle was pushed into a 2000 Ford Contour driven by Martha Scott of Terre Haute, but no one was injured in that vehicle, according to a release from police.

Tuttle and Singh’s vehicles were a total loss and Scott’s vehicle sustained heavy right rear damage, police said.

Vigo County Chief Deputy Clark Cottom said that rear-end crashes often occur in construction zones due to motorists not expecting slowed or stopped traffic.

“We would stress to motorists that they stay alert and use caution when traveling through construction zones,” Cottom said.

Authorities said the crash will be reported to the Indiana Department of Transportation, the agency that oversees construction zones.
