CLAY CITY —
Two Clay City men were arrested late Tuesday after a home was allegedly shot with a pellet gun.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that 20-year-old Jerry C. Smith and 25-year-old Kurt E. Sowers II were both arrested after they were identified by witnesses as being involved in the shooting on the outskirts of Clay City.
Witnesses reported seeing Smith and Sowers walking through town with a rifle, and other witnesses reported seeing the men at the scene of the shooting with a weapon.
The sheriff’s department reports that the pellet gun involved has been described as being able to fire a projectile at speeds of 1,200 feet per second, which is greater than the speeds achieved by rounds fired by some firearms.
The investigation also revealed that Sowers and a resident at the home that was shot had been involved in a romantic relationship which had ended earlier in the day. A disagreement about property also occurred, and is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident.
Both Smith and Sowers were booked into the Clay County Jail on preliminary charges of criminal recklessness.
