Third suspect sentenced for 2013 beating

Victims suffered facial injuries

TERRE HAUTE — An Illinois man has been sentenced in a February 2013 battery that hospitalized a Terre Haute man.

Jesse Norton, 21, of Marshall, received a sentence of six years in prison and was ordered to serve two years in custody with the remainder suspended to formal probation. Norton was given credit for time already served in the Vigo County Jail and work release program since his arrest.

Norton pled guilty to battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a class-C felony, for his participation in the beating of a man and a woman who were found in a rural area near Atherton in northern Vigo County.

The man was found along the side of the road with severe facial injuries, and was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment. A female victim with the man also suffered facial injuries.

Norton was originally charged with aggravated battery, a class-B felony, as a result of a Vigo County Sheriff’s Department investigation. Arrested along with Norton were David Rayhel Jr. and Britnie N. Parrish, both of Terre Haute.

Rayhel pled guilty to battery by means of a deadly weapon, a class-C felony, in August and was sentenced to four years in prison.

Parrish pled guilty to misdemeanor battery. She was sentenced in March 2013 to a one-year suspended sentence.

At the time of the incident, police reported that the alleged victims and suspects had been at a party on Rio Grande Road in northern Vigo County, when the two victims left the party location and were pursued by the three suspects in a vehicle.

The victim’s vehicle was allegedly forced off the road, and the alleged battery followed. The three suspects were located by police and arrested later that day near 13th and Poplar streets.
