Joy Sacopulos receives first Jeanne Knoerle Award

TERRE HAUTE — Joy Sacopulos, a long-time community volunteer, is the winner of the first Sister Jeanne Knoerle Sustainability Award, presented Thursday by the Our Green Valley Alliance for Sustainability, an environmental group based in the Wabash Valley.

Sacopulos, a founder of TREES Inc., one of the area’s most successful volunteer organizations, was honored for her commitment to the environment and the many initiatives she has championed.

Among many other things, she helped launch an electronic scrap recycling effort through TREES and Indiana State University. Her efforts kept hundreds of thousands of pounds of electronic scrap out of landfills, said Lorrie Heber, president of the alliance.

Our Green Valley also presented its first- Green Leaf Awards, which are reserved for a corporation and a not-for-profit or school that promote sustainability and the environment.

• Boral Bricks Inc. received this year’s corporate Green Leaf Award. The company received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2010 for its southern Vigo County facility. The company, which is based in Australia, has become a leader in sustainable manufacturing in the building products industry. Boral’s Vigo plant is a zero-waste facility, uses methane for power from a nearby landfill, recycles wastewater and has an on-site environmental officer.

• The White Violet Center for Eco-Justice, a ministry of the Sisters of Providence, was also recognized with a Green Leaf Award for its efforts over many years promoting sustainability and ecological justice. The White Violet Center grows completely organic crops, promotes small family farms and has brought attention to the topics of food, land, farming and the environment.
