Water main repairs tangle Brazil traffic

Work will continue for several days

TERRE HAUTE — Motorists traveling on U.S. 40 through Brazil may want to find another route around the Clay County city because of water main repairs.

The intersection of U.S. 40 at Indiana 59 — the most heavily traveled intersection in the heart of the city — is closed to northbound and southbound traffic from a ruptured water main.

Mayor Brian Wyndham told the Tribune-Star that repairs are expected this week as crews bore underneath the intersection to replace a four-inch water line with a new six-inch line.

“We hope to have this finished up in a couple of days,” Wyndham said. “We are rerouting traffic, and police are monitoring the traffic there.”

The water line first broke last Wednesday, and was noticed by police who saw water coming through the asphalt road surface. A repair in the intersection disrupted traffic for a few days. The water line ruptured again just three days later, on Saturday.

Wyndham said the damaged water line is 60 to 70 years old and is made of cast iron. It has deteriorated to the point where it cannot be repaired, he said.

A cost estimate for the project is not yet available, the mayor said. The repair bills will be paid for from the water department budget, which is funded by water customer user fees, he said.

“We are making progress on it,” Wyndham said of the repairs Tuesday afternoon. “Traffic is moving good. We are maintaining westbound traffic, but rerouting the eastbound lane.”
