Red Kettle campaign short of goal

Salvation Army taking donations through Dec. 24

TERRE HAUTE — Those bells you hear when you’re out shopping are your opportunity to remember those less fortunate this holiday season, and the Salvation Army is asking everyone to continue to help out.

The annual Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign runs through Christmas Eve, and donations in Vigo County remain shy of the charity’s 2012 goal of reaching $180,000, the Salvation Army reported.

So far, donations have reached 80 percent of the goal, said Gordon Hoag, captain of the Salvation Army in Terre Haute.

Meanwhile, the need for donations has not let up, Hoag said.

“The need has been up this year and we expect it to increase again next year,” he said.

Donations are used first to help needy families meet expenses during the Christmas season, Hoag said. They are also used to assist families all through the upcoming year, he said, adding all donations remain here in Vigo County.

Also, the Salvation Army continues to need volunteer bell ringers, Hoag said Wednesday. Minimum shifts are for two hours and can be at any of 19 locations in the area.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Salvation Army at 812-232-4081 or stop by  during regular business hours at 234 S. Eighth St. in Terre Haute.

After Christmas Eve, donations to the Red Kettle campaign can be mailed to the Terre Haute office or delivered in person, Hoag said.
