State police enforcing weight limit for Birch Creek Bridge

News Release

TERRE HAUTE — Troopers from the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division are enforcing the 3-ton weight limit for the Birch Creek Bridge on Indiana 46 approximately one mile west of Indiana 59 in Clay County. Vehicles weighing more than 3 tons are required to use alternate routes.

Troopers are using portable scales to weigh vehicles, and drivers not in compliance with the weight restrictions will be cited, according to a news release. Depending on how much a particular vehicle exceeds the limit, fines can be in the thousands of dollars.

Based on a recent bridge inspection, the Indiana Department of Transportation issued the restrictions on Aug. 23 and has placed weight limit signs around the area. INDOT is working to accelerate construction on the bridge to increase weight limits.
