Tree days branch out

Activities in Tree City to focus on environmental lessons

The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Two days set aside to focus on the environment — Earth Day was Monday and Arbor Day is Friday — are at the heart of celebrations this week in Terre Haute.

The city also will be celebrating its 15th year as a Tree City USA, having first been awarded the designation in 1999.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the USDA Forest Service, U.S. Conference of Mayors and National League of Cities and National Association of State Foresters.

The four requirements to become a Tree City USA are: to have a tree ordinance, to have an active tree board or department; to have an annual tree community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and to have an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Terre Haute also received a Tree City USA Growth Award, which recognizes environmental improvement and a higher level of tree care in the community as evidenced by additions or significant improvements to the tree care program during the past year.

Last year the city watered trees during the drought, built Maple Park and implemented national standards in tree risk assessments.

The city’s urban forester, Sheryle Dell, is hosting a series of events this week, giving away 1,500 seedlings, including red oak, white oak, chestnut oak, various nut trees, dogwoods and hawthorn, all native to Indiana.
