TERRE HAUTE — A Brazil man was arrested Saturday after police found about one pound of marijuana in his vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 70.

Christopher E. Lewis, 39, was arrested for the class-D felonies of possession of marijuana over 30 grams, dealing marijuana over 30 grams, and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, along with several misdemeanor charges.

Indiana State Police at Putnamville report that ISP trooper Jonathan Cumbie was on routine patrol in the westbound lanes of I-70 near the 28-mile marker when he noticed a 2005 Dodge Durango travel off the edge of the road and then left of center. Cumbie stopped the vehicle and noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle.

As Cumbie attempted to take the driver into custody, a struggle ensued and Lewis fled on foot into a wooded area. As assisting officers from the Clay County Sheriff’s Department arrived to help with the search, Lewis was able to covertly re-enter his vehicle and drive off.

He was pursued westbound by police for about two miles, traveling at speeds of 60 to 65 mph, before voluntarily pulling over and being taken into custody.
