Two die in Clay County crash

TERRE HAUTE — Two people died after being ejected from a car that crashed early Saturday south of Harmony in eastern Clay County.

The names of the two passengers have not been released by the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, which received a 911 call about the crash just after 6 a.m.

According to a news release from the sheriff’s office, when deputies arrived at the scene in the 9000 block of North County Road 300 East, they found a nearby property owner assisting the drive of the car. The two passengers were located in a small ditch. The passengers had been ejected from the car and were later pronounced dead by the Clay County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of the car was transported for treatment to St. Vincent Clay Hospital. The driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol, police reported.

The investigation indicates that the car was southbound when the car failed to negotiate a curve and continued straight off the road, sideswiping a tree and then striking another tree on the passenger side. The car then flipped and landed on its roof.

The driver reportedly told deputies that she was driving “a little too fast” and went off the road and began hitting trees.

Autopsies are set for Monday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
