UPDATE: Police identify victims of fatal car-train crash

Illinois State Police have released the names of those involved in a fatal car-train accident that occurred Wednesday afternoon in rural Clark County.

Amber N. Smith, 23, of Terre Haute was driving a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am and did not notice the approaching train, which was traveling east through northeastern Clark County about two miles from the Indiana-Illinois border, police said.

Smith was killed on impact as was a passenger, Rodney Mayer, 24, of Martinsville, Ill.

Three children in the back seat of the vehicle were injured and were flown to Indianapolis for treatment, according to police.

The injured children were identified as Korbin L. Moore, 4, and Emily D. Lenges, 2, both of Terre Haute, and Breanna N. Lenges, age 1.

A spokesman for Indiana University Health in Indianapolis said this morning that Korbin and Emily each are in critical condition, while Breanna was listed in fair condition.

All people involved were wearing seat belts and all of the children were in child restraint seats, police said.

The incident took place a little before 5 p.m. EST Wednesday on Fern Lake Road, an unpaved roadway that bisects the tracks in rural Clark County. The railroad crossing is marked, but it does not have crossing arms.
