Winter blasts hit Indiana again; wind chills well below zero

Snow, ice, low temps, high winds throughout day

TERRE HAUTE — A chilly, wintery mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain dropped on the Wabash Valley on Sunday leading to more school delays and potential cancellations in the area.

Vigo County School Superintendent Danny Tanoos announced on Sunday afternoon a two-hour delay for Vigo County schools for today, but warned folks to stay tuned in case conditions became worse overnight.

Police agencies from around the Wabash Valley were dealing with motor vehicle slide-offs, but not as many as might have been expected given the conditions, several area sheriff’s departments told the Tribune-Star Sunday night.

A winter storm warming, issued by the National Weather Service, expires today at 7 a.m. Snow, sleet and freezing rain were expected across the Wabash Valley, making this morning’s commute hazardous, the weather service advised.

About two inches of heavy, icy, wet snow had accumulated in downtown Terre Haute by 8 p.m. Sunday as temperatures dropped into the mid-teens. Another inch or two of accumulation was possible by this morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, arctic air was entering the region and dropping temperatures into the single digits this morning.

Winds of up to 15 MPH were expected to produce wind chills as low as 10 below zero, according to the weather service.
