Vigo School Corp. wants vacant lot for school parking

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Board of Commissioners Tuesday approved assigning lien rights on a vacant residential lot at 1900 S. Sixth St. to the Vigo County School Corp.

The school corporation intends to convert the vacant property into a parking lot for teachers at Farrington Grove Elementary School.

Commissioners approved a resolution that assigns the property’s lien rights to the school corporation.

“The school corporation will take steps necessary to get good title to the property and then it will be theirs,” said county attorney Michael Wright. “No one has been paying taxes on it, and it is unimproved and will not be a problem from the assessed valued standpoint, in my opinion,” Wright told commissioners.

The land is owned by NTA Property Management. It was valued in a recent county tax sale at $8,404, which includes unpaid taxes and penalties. The land’s assessed value is $6,500, Wright told commissioners.

The steps for the school corporation include notifying surrounding property owners if they have any legal claim to the vacant lot, Wright said. If no claims are made after 120 days, the school corporation would obtain the lot, which is at South Sixth and McKeen streets.
