Vigo adds two new deputies to force

TERRE HAUTE — Don Lark and Jeremy Thomas have joined the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department as the newest deputies in the patrol division.

Lark and Thomas took their oaths of service from Sheriff Greg Ewing during a ceremony Monday morning in the training room of the Vigo County Jail.

Lark has nine years experience in law enforcement, most recently serving with the West Terre Haute Police Department as patrolman and police chief.

Thomas has worked as a correctional officer for the Indiana Department of Correction at the Plainfield Correctional Facility for the past three years.

“It is very worthwhile serving the people of this county,” Ewing said, noting that officers can be called to a variety of situations ranging from a lost child or helping a motorist to a death investigation or homicide.

“It’s a long process to get to this point,” Ewing said of hiring new deputies. It can take four to six months to go through the selection process.

“We want to make sure we’ve got the best of the best, and the right person to serve the citizens of Vigo County,” he said.

A graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School, Thomas said he wanted to return to working in his home county. His long-term goal is to be part of a K-9 unit.

Witnessing his oath-taking were his wife, Brandi, parents, Vicki and John Thomas, and brother, Brian Thomas.

Lark has already been through training at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, but he will also go through department training as he starts his duties.

“It feels good,” Lark said of his new job. “It’s just a good opportunity to move forward. I’m glad I’ve gotten the chance.”

Family members supporting Lark were his wife, Carrie, sons, Austin and Donnie, mother, Judy, and in-laws, Frank and Mike Perkins.

Ewing said the sheriff’s department now has 34 merit deputies, with four openings. He encourages people to apply for a deputy position by going online to the sheriff’s department page on the county website at The deadline for applications  is Jan. 15.
