Fire destroys home; no one injured

TERRE HAUTE — No one was hurt in a Monday afternoon fire that destroyed a home in a remote area of northeastern Vigo County.

A two-story house atop a small hill on North Miami Gardens Road was a total loss from the fire that started about 4 p.m. in Nevins Township. No one was home when the fire started, firefighters said.

A neighbor who called 911 said he believed the blaze may have started in the home’s garage. A family pet, a dog, reportedly escaped from inside the home but was not immediately located.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, said Bill Camp, fire chief for the Nevins Township Volunteer Fire Department, who was on the scene.

Otter Creek and Lost Creek firefighters also responded to the scene, which was several miles north of U.S. 40 in a wooded and hilly area. A small lake next to the home was briefly used as a source for water to fight the fire. A fire hydrant about a quarter of a mile from the home was also used.

A couple and one child lived in the home, which was constructed only a few years ago, according to a relative at the scene.
