One person dead after fire near Coal City

COAL CITY — A fatal house fire in southeastern Clay County near Coal City is under investigation.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reports that a 911 call was received at about 11:35 p.m. Friday for a house fire in the 11000 block of South County Road 225 East.

Police were notified that the homeowner might still be inside the residence.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department and fire departments from Clay City, Lewis Township and Center Point responded to the scene, and firefighters began searching for the homeowner.

During the search, the structure began collapsing. At 8 a.m. Saturday, a body was found inside the residence by Clay City firefighters and the State Fire Marshal’s investigator.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the identity and cause of death for the victim.
