PetSmart hosts pet adoption weekend

TERRE HAUTE — If you’ve been thinking of adding a new, four-legged member to your family, this weekend could be your big chance.

PetSmart, a pet supply retailer in Towne South Plaza on U.S. 41 South, is hosting a pet adoption weekend featuring available dogs and cats from humane shelters from five counties.

The event is going on today from 9 a.m. to dark and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pet adoption fees range from $10 for some cats to up to $150 for some dogs, said Gordon Simpson, PetSmart store manager. That’s “very reasonable,” Simpson said, noting the animals have received all of their shots and, unless they are too young, have been spayed or neutered.

In all, about 200 dogs and cats of a wide variety of sizes, breeds and ages will be available for adoption this weekend, Simpson said. At the last PetSmart adoption weekend, more than 130 pets found new homes, he said. This time, the goal is 150.

PetSmart Charities, a not-for-profit organization, is donating $35 to the humane societies involved in the pet adoption day for each of their animals that finds a new home. That can help bring much-needed revenue to the shelters, Simpson noted. PetSmart Charities also contributed nearly $2,000 to help pay for the event, he said.

The adoption weekend is taking place in the parking lot outside PetSmart and inside the store.

Volunteers from the Parke-Vermillion, Sullivan, Clay and Terre Haute humane societies were busily walking dogs, filling out paperwork and assisting potential adopters Friday afternoon.

The event started Friday afternoon and, in just the first 30 minutes, 13 pets had found new homes, including Precious and Preston, 11-week old Labrador Retriever/mastiff mixes.

“I’ve been wanting a dog,” said Elaine Andrews of Sullivan, who was holding Preston while her brother, Tyler, held Precious. And, although just small puppies now, Precious and Preston will not stay that way long.

“I like big dogs,” Elaine said when asked why she selected the pair. “And they’re cute.”
