Police find meth, explosive while serving warrant

TERRE HAUTE — A pocket-sized explosive device was discovered and destroyed late Thursday in Vigo County during an incident in which four people were arrested.

At 11:15 p.m., Indiana State Police Troopers were serving an arrest warrant for manufacturing methamphetamine on Jeffrey Taylor, 45 at a home in the 2900 block of East Moyer Drive.

ISP Sgt. Joe Watts reported that during the warrant service, which included members of the Terre Haute Police Department and the Street Crimes Unit, police discovered several items commonly associated with meth labs.

Police also found that Donald Denehie, 47 of Terre Haute, possessed a small explosive device. The metal device was cylindrical and approximately five inches in length and two inches in diameter. Internally the device was filled with black powder.

THPD Police Chief John Plasse stated the  device included a fuse that could be lit so that the device could be thrown like a grenade.

“That’s the first one I’ve been told about,” Plasse said of the small bombs that could be used against law enforcement. “It’s kind of scary that it’s something we haven’t seen before in this community.”

Once the device was found, the Indiana State Police Explosive Ordnance team was contacted to render the item safe. It was destroyed at the scene. The small explosive device is often referred to as a “cricket.”

Denehie was arrested at the scene for possession of a destructive device, a class-C felony.

Also facing the class-B felony charge of dealing or manufacturing methamphetamine, and the class-D felony charges of sale of precursors, pseudoephedrive storage and sale, dumping controlled waste and visiting a common nuisance were Denehie, along with 42-year-old Ricky Hamilton, 45-year-old Jeffrey Taylor and 25-year-old Stephanie Frakes, all of Terre Haute.

All four suspects were incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.

Vigo Superior Court 6 Judge Michael Lewis found probable cause for their arrests. All four defendants will appear in court next week for formalization of charges.
