Man charged in connection with illegal hunts

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man has been arrested and accused of organizing game hunts without the consent of property owners.

Terry Malone II, 35, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Thursday, where he faces two felony and four misdemeanor charges related to an incident in the area of Indiana 63 south of Sanford Avenue about three miles north of Terre Haute.

Indiana Conservation Officer Max Winchell reported that Malone, who is the operator of Buck Creek Outfitters, received $1,050 from two men in exchange for a three-day guided wild turkey hunt. The arrangement included hunting location, guide service and lodging.

On April 28, officer Jason Sullivan located two hunters on land owned by Peabody Coal Co. The land was leased for farming by Marrs Farms, who had reported a recent rash of trespassers on the property.

Sullivan found a truck and saw empty gun cases and wild turkey decoys in the vehicle. In a nearby wooded area, Sullivan located hunters Jake Workman, 45, Wolcottville, and Daniel Jaquay, 45, Kendallville. They were accompanied by Malone’s hunting guide, Mark Workman, 23, New Haven.

Police said that the hunters stated they had paid Malone for the hunt, and that he had directed them to the hunting location.

Winchell reports that according to Peabody Coal and Marrs Farms, no one has been given permission to hunt on the property.

Malone was arrested on May 7 and has been charged with two counts of class-D felony theft, and two class-A misdemeanors of criminal trespass and two class-C misdemeanor counts of hunting without consent of landowner.

Winchell reports that Malone has similar charges pending in Sullivan County, and he also has had recent convictions relating to wildlife crimes in other courts.
